MandoMutt has been blessed with a gaggle of special Ellis mandolins of late, but none as special as this fine example. This offering, s/n 140 – 08 SP was the prototype for the Ellis Special model and it features top shelf woods, including a one piece back, superb appointments and a lovely voice. Absolutely phenomenal.
Adirondack Spruce top, highly figured Maple one piece back, Maple sides and neck in a cremona sunburst varnished finish, 3-ply bindings throughout (body is bound top and sides), radius Ebony fretboard, 1-1/8″ bone nut, abbreviated Ebony pick guard, parallel tone bars, and an exquisite Mother-of-Pearl headstock inlay. Nickle hardware includes engraved James tailpiece and Waverly tuning gears with pearl buttons.
Rich and dynamic sound. Warm and woody with excellent depth, balance and sustain. Complex overtones. Strong bluegrass chop and volume. A fine example of the modern Ellis mandolin sound.
Near mint condition, exceptionally clean. Has a chip/blemish in the top coat at edge of headtsock, a very light arm rest shadow and very minor fretwear.
Includes a Calton, black/green. Trades gladly considered on this fine American made mandolin.
