Remarkable Phoenix mandolin, built by, Rolfe Gerhardt, s/n 493. This fine example features top shelf woods and excellent appointments combined with a sensational voice. I’m not certain what the Custom appointments are, but Phoenix Custom Mandolin is on the label. Sensational!
Select Spruce top (looks like old Engelmann), highly figured Maple back/sides/neck in a tradit dark burst gloss finish. Radius Ebony fretboard, 1-1/8″ nut width and abbreviated Ebony pickguard. Parallel tone bars, Mother-of-Pearl headstock inlay. Hardware includes an Ebony topped tailpiece and Grover tuning gears. Also has a pick-up, unknown make. Mandolin appears to be 100% original.
If you’re a fan of big, round, woody tone, this fine offering should be considered. This mandolin is a Hoss. Sound that you can feel. Very powerful and responsive. Definitely a banjo slayer. Aggressive bluegrass chop.
Excellent-plus condition overall. Body shows some superficial play wear; light finish scratches and a minor blemish or two. Frets show light wear. Headstock shows some string scratches.
Includes black Eastman/Superior fiberglass case.
