We like this mandolin. Sounds delightful. Dry and warm. Very dry. Mutt adores dry tone. Plenty of pop and excellent note definition. This is s/n 499, handcrafted by one of the greats. Excellent appointments and premium woods.
Specs:
Solid Spruce top (looks like Engelmann), highly figured Maple back/sides/neck in a tobacco in a tobacco, gloss lacquer finish, 3-ply bound body and headstock, 2-ply bound fretboard. Radius Ebony fretboard with snowflake inlays, 1-1/8″ nut width, Schaller tuning gears and elegant Mother-of-Pearl headstock inlay.
We love the sound. Remarkable clarity and precise note definition, and so, so dry. Sweet and tender when you play it lightly, but plenty of pop when you get aggressive. Fabulous setup, plays well up and down the neck. Percussive chop. Beyond Beast sound.
Excellent overall condition, with playwear relative to age. It was offered to us as having “very little playwear”, but that is definitely inaccurate and quite understated. The top has wear into the wood around the treble f-hole, as shown in photos, and shows a sufficient number of dings and scratched below the fretboard and other small mic dings and pings throughout the top. One other scratch of note near the tailpiece is around an inch in length. Back has relatively clean with just a few tiny dings. Headstock has some string scratches. Frets are in fine shape with almost no wear.
Offered with original shaped hardshell case. Trades gladly considered on this fine American made instrument.
